International NGO Safety and Security Association (INSSA) Privacy Policy

 

This Privacy Policy describes how the International Safety and Security Association (referred to in this Privacy Policy as “INSSA,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), with offices registered at P.O Box 7236, Silver Spring, MD 20907, as the operator of the website www.ingossa.org, www.inssa.ngo, www.inssa.ong, and www.inssa.org (the “Site”), and the services provided through the Site (the Site and these services constituting the “Service”), collects information when you visit the Service.   It also explains how we use and disclose the information we collect from you, and your rights in relation to that information.   By accessing, visiting or using the Service, or otherwise affirmatively accepting the terms of this Privacy Policy, you expressly consent to our collection, storage, use and disclosure of your information as described in this Privacy Policy.   Please note that if you disagree with anything in this Privacy Policy, you must not use the Service. 

1. Information Collected through the Service.

A. Information You Directly and Voluntarily Provide to Us. 

If you are a visitor to the Service, we may collect     information that you provide to us when you contact us or send inquiries or other communications to us.  [You may also choose to provide your email address to us if you would like to receive additional information about the Service and the services and information we provide.]  If you register for one of our programs through the Service, you will be required to provide certain information as part of the registration process.  This information will include [your first and last name, email address and your location of residence]. 

B. Information Automatically Collected Through the Service. 

We may automatically collect information about you when you use the Service. For example, if you access the Service through a computer, we will automatically collect information such as your browser type and version, computer and connection information, IP address and standard web log information.  If you access the Service through a mobile device, we may also be able to identify the location of your mobile device.   You may choose not to share your location details with us by adjusting your mobile device’s location services settings.  For instructions on changing the relevant settings, please contact your service provider or device manufacturer.

We may automatically collect information from you when you use the Service using “cookies” and other similar technologies, such as web beacons, to automatically collect information about you when you use the Service.  Cookies are small amounts of data that are stored within your computer’s Internet browser and that are accessed and recorded by the websites that you visit so that they can recognize the same browser navigating online at a later time.

Information that may be collected by cookies when you use the Service may include, without limitation:

  • the pages you visit within the Service;
  • the date and time of your visit to the Service;
  • the amount of time you spend using the Service;
  • the Internet Protocol (IP) address used to connect your computer to the Internet; and/or
  • your computer and connection information such as your browser type and version, operating system and platform.

You can set your browser to reject cookies or to notify you when you are sent a cookie. However, if you disable cookies you may not be able to log in to the Service or to use certain features of the Service. C. Information Collected by Third Parties through Third Party Links and Content.

The Service may include links to other websites and other content from third party businesses.  These third party businesses may use cookies, web beacons or other similar technology to collect information about you.  INSSA does not have access to or control over these third parties or the cookies, web beacons or other technology that these third parties may use.  We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third parties or the content on any third party website. 

You are encouraged to review the privacy policies of the different websites you visit.

D. Information Collected by Third Party Analytics Services. 

We may work with third party analytics services to help us understand how the Service is being used, such as tracking the frequency and duration of use of the Service. We may use Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, Inc. (“Google”), to collect information about your use of the Service. Google and these analytics services may use cookies to collect information about the content you view, what websites you visit immediately prior to and after visiting the Service, and your system information and geographic information.

The information generated by these cookies about your use of the Service will be transmitted to and stored by the applicable analytics services. The information collected by these analytics services allows us to analyze your use of the Service

E. Information You Share on Third Party Websites or through Social Media Services. 

The Service may include links to third party websites and social media services where you will be able to post comments, stories, reviews or other information.  Your use of these third party websites and social media services may result in the collection or sharing of information about you by these third party websites and social media services.

F. Information You Post on the Service. 

If you post information on public areas of the Service that information may be collected and used by INSSA, other users of the Service, and the public generally.  We strongly recommend that you do not post any information through the Service that allows strangers to identify or locate you or that you otherwise do not want to share with the public.]

2. How We Use the Information We Collect.

We use the information we gather through the Service to operate, provide, improve, and maintain the Ning Platform, and our other services and systems; to develop new products and services; to prevent abusive and fraudulent use of the Ning Platform and our other services and systems; to send you administrative messages, and information about Networks, content, and Ning services in which we believe you may be interested; and for other administrative and internal business purposes.  We may also use this information to contact and communicate with you and to respond to your communications and requests. If you are a registered user, we may email you with information that we believe may be of interest to you.

If you wish to opt-out of receiving these emails from us, please follow the instructions contained in each email you receive from us which will allow you to opt-out of receiving further email marketing communications from us.

A. Online Advertising; Tracking. 

INSSA and third party businesses may use the information collected through the Service using cookies, web beacons, and other similar technologies to help manage online advertising programs.  This information may enable us, as well as third-party advertising services and other third-party businesses to track the actions of users online over time and across different web sites or platforms to measure statistics relating to marketing efforts, and to deliver electronic advertisements that may be more relevant to individual consumers and that will improve the consumer experience.

Do Not Track:  Your browser may allow you to adjust your browser settings so that “do not track” requests are sent to the websites that you visit.  However, INSSA will not disable tracking technology that may be active on the Service in response to any “do not track” requests that we receive from your browser.]

B. How We Share Your Information with Third Parties.

We do not sell or rent user information we collect through the Service to any third parties for their own marketing purposes. In the event INSSA wants to sell or rent your information to third parties for their own marketing purposes in the future, we will notify you and you will have an opportunity to affirmatively opt-in to receiving these third party marketing communications. INSSA does share your information with third parties in some circumstances as follows:

C. Employees, Third-Party Processors and Third-Party Service Providers.

We will disclose your information to our employees, volunteers, contractors, affiliates, distributors, dealers, vendors and suppliers (“Service Providers”) who provide certain services to us or on our behalf, such as operating and supporting the Service, analyzing data, or performing marketing or consulting services.  These Service Providers will only have access to the information needed to perform these limited functions on our behalf.

D. Response to Subpoenas or Court Orders or to Protect Rights and to Comply with Our Policies.

To the extent permitted by law, we will disclose your information to government authorities or third parties if: (i) required to do so by law, or in response to a subpoena or court order; (ii) we believe in our sole discretion that disclosure is reasonably necessary to protect against fraud, to protect the property or other rights of us or other users, third parties or the public at large; or (iii) we believe that you have abused the Service by using it to attack other systems or to gain unauthorized access to any other system, to engage in spamming or otherwise to violate applicable laws. You should be aware that, following disclosure to any third party, your information may be accessible by others to the extent permitted or required by applicable law.

E. Business Transfers; Bankruptcy.

In the event of a merger, acquisition, bankruptcy or other sale of all or a portion of our assets, any user information owned or controlled by us may be one of the assets transferred to third parties. We reserve the right, as part of this type of transaction, to transfer or assign your information and other information we have collected from users of the Service to third parties.  Other than to the extent ordered by a bankruptcy or other court, the use and disclosure of all transferred user information will be subject to this Privacy Policy. However, any information you submit or that is collected after this type of transfer may be subject to a new privacy policy adopted by the successor entity.

F. Aggregate Information.

We may share information relating to users of the Service with affiliated or unaffiliated third parties on an anonymous, aggregate basis. While this information will not identify you personally, in some instances these third parties may be able to combine this aggregate information with other data they have about you, or that they receive from third parties, in a manner that allows them to identify you personally. 

3. Children Under Age 13.

The Service is not intended for children under age 13, or for anyone under age 18 or the applicable age of majority without involvement of a parent or guardian.  We do not knowingly collect or distribute personal information from or about children under the age of 13.

4. Security.

We implement industry standard security measures intended to protect against the loss, misuse and alteration of the information under our control. Please be aware that no data transmission over the Internet can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. As a result, INSSA cannot guarantee or warrant the security of any information you transmit on or through the Service and you do so at your own risk.

5. Amendments to this Privacy Policy.

We will notify you of changes to this Privacy Policy by posting the amended terms on the Service at least thirty (30) days before the effective date of the changes.  If you do not agree to the changes, you should discontinue your use of the Service prior to the time the modified privacy policy takes effect.  If you continue using the Service after the modified privacy policy takes effect, you will be bound by the modified privacy policy.

6. Use of Information Outside Your Country of Residence.

If you choose to use the Service or provide your information to us, your information may be transferred to, processed and maintained on servers or databases located outside of the country or jurisdiction where you are located.  Your agreement to this Privacy Policy followed by your submission of information through the Service represents your consent and agreement to these practices.  If you do not want your information transferred to or processed or maintained outside of the country or jurisdiction where you are located, you should not use the Service. 

7. Special Notice to Users Located in the EEA. 

The data that we collect from you will be transferred to, and stored in the United States, outside the European Economic Area (“EEA”) at where it will be processed by [staff who work for us or for one of our suppliers]. This includes staff engaged in, among other things, the processing of information relevant to the INSSA and its suppliers. By clicking the [“I accept” box] in connection with this Privacy Policy, you agree to this transfer, storing or processing. We have in place appropriate measures to safeguard this transferred data under applicable data protection law. We will take all steps reasonably necessary to ensure that your data is treated securely, as described in Section 6 above.

8. Accessing, Changing and Managing Your Information. 

If you are a registered user of the Service, you may make changes to the user information you have provided in connection with your account by logging in to your account and changing the applicable information. You may also request changes by contacting us at membership [at] ingossa [dot] org.  Following receipt of a request from you, we will take reasonable steps to update, correct or delete your information as requested.

Site Security & Privacy Settings

The INSSA Website was created and is hosted by Ning Networks (www.ning.com), heretofore referred to as Ning. The following information is provided by Ning to assist network users determine and set the appropriate levels of security for the information they provide and what will be visible on the internet.

Network Creators have complete control over the privacy settings, content and members of their Ning Networks. If there is anything that does not fit within a Ning Network’s privacy and safety goals, please let the Network Creator know right away. You can report a problem to the Network Creator of a Ning Network by clicking on “Report an Issue” at the bottom of every page. The sooner you let them know, the better! They have the tools available to resolve the issue immediately. If you are unable to resolve the issue with the Network Creator, please contact Ning and/or the authorities, as necessary.

Additionally, as a member of a Ning Network, there are many options available to help you manage your privacy settings and ensure that you are comfortable with who can view your content. With the tools built in to a Ning Network, you can:

 

 

Choose the Privacy Settings for Your Profile Information and Profile Page

You have full control over how you display your information on Ning and all of the Ning Networks you join. In addition to any profile you create on a Ning Network, you will also have a Ning profile that’s only viewable by you. Your Ning profile allows you to add a set of basic details and a photo to your Ning account and then pre-populates your profile when you join a new Ning Network. You can update your Ning profile at any time by signing in to Ning.com, or you can edit your details and profile photo for a specific Ning Network at the time you join.

When you join a Ning Network, you create a profile specific to that Ning Network and you can choose what information about yourself is publicly displayed. You can opt to not display your birthday, age, gender and location on your profile page on every Ning Network that you are a member of. In addition, you can change the privacy level of your profile page and list of friends at any time. Your profile page and list of friends can be set to be visible to just your friends on that Ning Network, to only members on that Ning Network, or to everyone. If you have changed the privacy of your profile page, visitors who don’t have access to your profile page will only be able to view your name, photo, profile page title and any basic information you have decided to keep public.

To change the privacy setting of your profile page and list of friends on a Ning Network, click the “Settings” link in the upper right corner of the page and then the “Privacy” link in the left column. Below “My profile page and friends can be viewed by…” choose the option you feel comfortable with.

To opt “to not display” your gender, birthday or age on a Ning Network, click the “Settings” link in the upper right corner of the page. On this page, you can select “Don’t display my birthday or age” from the dropdown menu below your birthday and check the “Don’t Display” box next to your gender.

Limit Who Can View Your Events

You can change your privacy settings so that just you or your friends can view your events. To do this, click the “Settings” link in the upper right corner of the page and then the “Privacy” link in the left column. Below “My events can be viewed by…” choose the option you feel comfortable with. By default, your events may be accessed by anyone who browses the Ning Network if both the Ning Network and your profile page are public.

Limit Who Can View Your Photos, Videos and Blog

You can change your privacy settings so that only you or your friends can view the photos, videos and blog posts you upload to a Ning Network. To do this, click the “Settings” link in the upper right corner of the page and then the “Privacy” link in the left column. Below “My blog, photos and videos can be viewed by…” choose the option you feel comfortable with. By default, your blog, photos and videos may be accessed by anyone who browses the Ning Network if both the Ning Network and your profile page are public.

You can also decide who is able to view your photos, videos and blog posts on a Ning Network when you add the specific photo(s), video(s) or blog post. At the time of upload, you can choose whether the content is viewable to just you, just your friends or to anyone. If you want to change the privacy setting on a specific photo, video or blog post after it has been uploaded, go to the detail page for that photo, video or blog post.

 

  • For photos, click the “Edit Photo” link below the photo.
  • For videos, click the “Edit Video” link below the video.
  • For blog posts, click the “Edit Post” link in the “Admin Options” box.

 

Select the new privacy settings you would like and click “Save Changes.” By default, your photos, videos and blog may be accessed by anyone who browses the Ning Network if both the Ning Network and your profile page are public.

Restrict Comments On Your Photos, Videos and Blog

You can decide who can comment on your photos, videos and blog. To change this setting, click the “Settings” link in the right column of the page and then the “Privacy” link in the left column. Below “Comments on my blog, photos and videos can be added by…” you can choose to allow just you or just your friends to comment on your photos, videos and blog. Additionally, you have full control over the comments that other people post on your photos, videos, and blog posts. To delete any comment on your content, click the “x” that appears to the right of the comment. By default, any member of the Ning Network can comment on the content you have uploaded to the Ning Network.

Approve Comments On Your Blog Before They are Published

You can choose to approve comments to your blog before they are published. This means that when someone comments on a blog post you have written, it will not appear right away. You can review the comment and choose to approve or delete it – before anyone else sees it. To do this, click on the “Settings” link and then the “Privacy” link in the left column. Below “When someone adds a comment on my blog…” select “Wait for my approval.” By default, when someone comments on your blog, it’s published immediately.

Approve Comments On Your Profile Page Before They are Published

You can choose to approve comments to your profile page before they are published. This means that when someone comments on your profile page, it will not appear right away. You can review the comment and choose to approve or delete it – before anyone else sees it. To do this, click on the “Settings” link in the right column of the page and then the “Privacy” link in the left column. Below “When someone adds a comment on my profile…” in the Moderation section, select “Wait for my approval.” By default, when someone comments on your profile page, it’s published immediately.

Approve Virtual Gifts Before They Appear

You can choose to approve virtual gifts before they are accepted and published on your profile page. This means that when someone gives you a gift, it will not appear right away. You can review the gift and choose to approve or delete it – before anyone else sees it. To do this, click on the “Settings” link in the right column of the page and then the “Privacy” link. Below “When someone sends me a gift…” select “Wait for my approval.” Additionally, you can make a public gift private or delete a gift at any time. To do so, click on the gift and then select “Make Private” or “Delete” in the Admin Options section. By default, when someone sends you a gift, it’s accepted and published immediately.

 Control Which Actions Appear In Latest Activity

The Latest Activity stream never displays messages you send, pages or profiles you view, invitations you decline or people you de-friend or decline. Beyond that, you can control which of your activities appear in a Ning Network’s Latest Activity stream. To do this, click on the “Settings” link in the right column of the page and then the “Privacy” link. Below “Publish an item in Latest Activity when I…” choose which actions you are comfortable with appearing in the Latest Activity stream on the main page of the Ning Network. You can also delete any of your items from Latest Activity stream immediately on your profile page or on a Ning Network’s main page by hovering your mouse over the item you would like to remove and clicking the “X” that appears next to it. By default, most of your actions on a Ning Network will appear as a Latest Activity item. This includes new content and comments you add, friendships you confirm, updates to your profile, and when you RSVP to events.

 Control Who Can Send You Messages

When you join a Ning Network, you can only send and receive messages with specific kinds of people. You can exchange messages with the Network Creator and any Network Administrators, the group creator and administrators of any groups you choose to join, and your friends on the Ning Network. To control who can send you messages, be mindful of who you add or accept as a friend on a Ning Network and be aware that anyone you make a friendship with on that social network will be able to contact you across any Ning Network that you both belong to. If you do not know someone who has requested to be your friend, your best bet is to ignore their friend request.

Block Messages From Someone

If you no longer want to receive messages from someone, you can block them from contacting you via private message in a few simple steps. Go to your inbox and locate a message from the person you want to block, open the message and click the “Block messages” link. You can also block messages via a member’s profile page. This way, you can block messages from someone to prevent them from ever sending you a message. Below their profile photo, click the “Block Messages” link.

Member Privacy and Search Engines

When members join your Ning Network, they may not realize that they are creating an online profile of themselves. Like with most content online, this profile and information may be visible to anyone, including friends, family, employers, and strangers if certain privacy settings are not designated. That’s why it’s important to pick the appropriate settings for your Ning Network and to educate your members about who can see their profile activity, and the privacy options available to them.

Educating your members about the privacy setting of your network can help them determine what information they want to share on their profile. If you have chosen to have a public Ning Network, their name and profile might turn up in search engine results on sites like Google and Yahoo. Although members can update their personal privacy settings, their name, photo and any information they have chosen to keep public may appear in search results if your Ning Network is public.

Even after you change your Ning Network from public to private, or a member updates or removes information from their profile or makes it private, it may still appear in search results, as search engines take some time to update. However, after a little while, the search results should reflect the new or updated information. The time this update can take varies between search engines, so you may also want to contact the search engine directly if you have other questions about content appearing in search results.

Control Privacy Settings of Your My Page

By default, anyone can view your My Page and list of friends on a public Ning Network. However, you can change the privacy settings for this page at any time. You can set your My Page to be visible to everyone (default), to only members of the Ning Network or just to your friends on the network.

To change the privacy of your My Page, click on the “Settings” link in the right column of the page and click “Privacy” on the left. Choose the levels of privacy you would like then scroll down and click “Save.”

By default, all photos, videos and blog posts you add to the Ning Network will still be visible to everyone. You can also choose the privacy level of the content you add from this page. You can overwrite this setting for particular items when adding them or by editing them after they have been added to the network. Changes you make to these settings are not retroactive, so you would need to update the visibility of previously uploaded photos, videos, or blog posts.

If you have changed the privacy of your My Page, visitors who don’t have access to your My Page will only be able to view your name, photo and basic information, like age, gender and location.

Network Creators and administrators will still be able to view all member My Pages in full, regardless of privacy settings. In addition, Network Creators and administrators can limit access to their My Pages, just as other members can.
